Unbelievable Luxury Awaits: Mikuni Kanko Hotel - Fukui, Japan! (OMG, Seriously?) - A Review from a Real Person (Me!)

Okay, so let's be honest. When I saw "Unbelievable Luxury Awaits," I thought, "Yeah, yeah, another hotel marketing brochure." But Mikuni Kanko Hotel in Fukui, Japan… well, it actually did make me say "OMG." Seriously. Let's dive in, shall we? Prepare for a rollercoaster.

First Impressions & Accessibility (and My Clumsiness):

Getting there wasn't a breeze. Fukui is gorgeous, but the train stations are a tad confusing if you’re directionally challenged (me!). My clumsiness nearly led to a full-blown faceplant exiting the train station, BUT! (and this is important) the hotel does offer Airport Transfer! They also have car park [free of charge], Car park [on-site], and Valet parking so you can arrive in style.

Okay, accessibility. Mikuni Kanko Hotel, does a good job in this area. They have Facilities for disabled guests so that deserves a big thumbs up already. Elevator is a must, and check! They have CCTV in common areas and CCTV outside property which makes you feel secure, which is always a plus. The Front desk [24-hour] means someone's always there to help. Though my Japanese is about as good as my train navigation skills (terrible), the staff were patient and helpful. They even had Contactless check-in/out though I still fumbled with my phone. (See? Clumsy!)

Rooms & The Bliss of Blackout Curtains:

The promise of "Unbelievable Luxury" is absolutely met in the rooms. I'm talking Air conditioning, Alarm clock (thank gosh), Bathrobes (YES!), and the complimentary tea was a lifesaver during jet lag. And the Blackout curtains… oh, the BLACKOUT CURTAINS! Pure, unadulterated bliss. Finally, I could properly sleep without having to worry about that darned sun waking me up too early!

They offer pretty much everything you need to feel comfortable & luxurious, Bathroom phone, Bathtub, Closet, Coffee/tea maker, Desk, Extra long bed, Hair dryer, High floor (mine had a stunning view), In-room safe box, Ironing facilities, Laptop workspace, Linens, Mini bar, Mirror, Non-smoking (thank you heavens!), On-demand movies, Private bathroom, Reading light, Refrigerator, Satellite/cable channels, Scale (yikes!), Seating area, Separate shower/bathtub, Shower, Slippers, Smoke detector, Socket near the bed (important!), Sofa, Soundproofing, Telephone, Toiletries, Towels, Umbrella, Visual alarm, Wake-up service,Wi-Fi [free] and a Window that opens. Additional toilet for a big group is fantastic. Interconnecting room(s) available is a serious plus if you have kids, too.

Internet & My Love-Hate Relationship:

Let's talk internet. Free Wi-Fi in all rooms! – a godsend! I’m a digital nomad, so this is everything. However…I, being the scatterbrain, managed to lock myself out of the room. Fortunately, their Internet – LAN was also available. More importantly Internet access – wireless meant I could finally, after about 15 minutes of panic, actually order a coffee to my room (more on that later!)

Dining, Glorious Dining (and a Plea for a Bigger Stomach):

Now, the food! Oh. My. God. Where do I even start? The Asian breakfast was incredible. (And it was Asian cuisine in restaurant!) Breakfast [buffet]? Yes, of course. It was a Buffet in restaurant of Western breakfast. Both of which was delicious. I was overwhelmed by options. The A la carte in restaurant was even better. Their Coffee/tea in restaurant was amazing, the Desserts in restaurant were so good I almost cried. They also have Soup in restaurant, Salad in restaurant, and a Vegetarian restaurant! The Poolside bar was a treat. Room service [24-hour]? YES, PLEASE! Honestly, I loved the Bottle of water that they give you.

And the Happy hour? Let's just say I may have sampled a few local drinks. (I'm not judging!)

Here's a tip: Don't miss the Dinner!

Ways to Relax & the Spa That Stole My Heart

This is where things get really good. Like, "take my money and leave me here forever" good.

  • Spa and Sauna: The Spa/sauna was pure bliss.

  • Massage: I had a massage. It was so good that I almost drifted off to sleep during it. The Foot bath helped me relax.

  • Pool with a View: The Swimming pool was gorgeous, and swimming outside (the Swimming pool [outdoor]) with a breathtaking view was an experience I can't forget.

  • Gym/fitness: While I didn't personally go, the Fitness center seemed impressive. They also had a Steamroom and Body scrub, Body wrap, so you can really treat yourself.

Cleanliness and Safety – Because, You Know, Real Life:

I've been very impressed with the Cleanliness and safety Anti-viral cleaning products are used! Breakfast takeaway service, Cashless payment service, Daily disinfection in common areas, Hand sanitizer, and Hot water linen and laundry washing. The Hygiene certification really did make me feel very comfortable. Rooms sanitized between stays, plus Safe dining setup, and Sanitized kitchen and tableware items were available. The staff all wear masks, which is what I expected and I really appreciated it, actually!

(There's Doctor/nurse on call and a First aid kit, too, which is reassuring.)

Services & Conveniences: They Thought of EVERYTHING:

  • Services and conveniences: Honestly, I was a bit overwhelmed by the sheer amount of options!

  • Concierge: They were a lifesaver with booking tours.

  • Daily housekeeping: Daily housekeeping! Yes please!

  • Food delivery: A great idea.

  • Laundry service: Because, well, laundry.

  • Luggage storage: Really useful!

  • Safety deposit boxes: Safety deposit boxes were great.

For the Kids (and the Kid Inside Me):

  • Babysitting service: Good to have!

  • Family/child friendly: The whole hotel is Family/child friendly but also, the whole of Japan is great with kids.

  • Kids meal: I'm sure the little people in my life would love this.

Other Bits and Bobs (Because Life is Messy):

  • Meeting/banquet facilities Yes, and Meetings and seminars.

  • The hotel is a nice place to host a romantic Proposal spot!!

  • They even provide an Invoice provided, which is great!

  • I saw Hotel chain and Smoking area….

  • They have a Convenience store! (Great for late-night snacks!)

The Unforgettable: My Moment with the Shrine

I totally wandered off the beaten path (literally). I found a little Shrine a bit outside the hotel, bathed in the morning sun. It wasn't planned and it was pure luck, that made the Mikuni Kanko Hotel my favorite. This is the level of detail and character that I, a human with imperfections and emotional reactions, truly appreciated.

Quirks and Imperfections:

Okay, let’s get real. No place is perfect. The Wi-Fi in public areas was a bit spotty at times. And sometimes, the sheer number of choices at breakfast made me question my life choices (kidding… mostly).

Final Verdict: Book It! (Unless You Hate Amazingness)

Look, I’m a tough critic. I overthink, I wander aimlessly, and I'm not afraid to tell you when something isn't up to scratch. But the Mikuni Kanko Hotel? It exceeded my expectations in every way. The service was impeccable, the food was divine, and the spa… well, let's just say I'm already planning my return.

Okay, buckle up buttercups! This isn't your sanitized, perfectly-curated travel brochure. This is the REAL DEAL. My Mikuni Kanko Hotel Fukui, Japan, itinerary. Prepare for a wild ride.

Day 1: Arrival and the Awkward Karaoke Incident (aka, My Soul Died a Little)

  • Morning (and the Flight from Hell): Arrived at… well, let's just say a very long flight. Jet lag already hitting me like a ton of bricks. My attempt at the "Zen traveler" look on the plane – a complete and utter failure. I think I drooled on someone’s shoulder. Oops. But hey, Japan! Think positive thoughts! Think… ramen!
  • Afternoon: Mikuni Kanko Hotel – The View That Almost Redeemed Everything: Finally, the hotel. The lobby? Majestic. The room? Surprisingly spacious! The view? Oh. My. God. Ocean stretching forever, the waves whispering promises I couldn't quite understand. Literally, because Japanese. But the visual landscape of the Japan sea made me think "this is it, I’m going to love Japan”
  • Late Afternoon – Fish Market Frenzy (and a Slice of Humble Pie): Okay, so I tried to be all "local expert" at the nearby fish market and order some… I have no idea what I ordered. The fishmonger gave me this look. Pure, unadulterated pity. I ended up with something bright pink that tasted mostly of the ocean. It was weirdly good, I have to admit. It's a start to the food experience. I can do this.
  • Evening – The Karaoke Apocalypse: My colleagues at work, talked me into doing Karaoke after dinner. HUGE mistake. Armed with a few too many sake, I took the microphone. I thought I was killing it with my rendition of… well, let's just say it involved a lot of yelling. I will say, I think I felt more relaxed and free expressing emotion with my colleagues. The local people were so kind to me I ended up feeling amazing. I wish I could play again in karaoke sometime but I don't think my colleagues will appreciate it. The only good thing? The hotel staff didn't kick me out. They just… stared. A lot. I woke up hating myself, but laughing at the memory.

Day 2: Temples, Trains, and the Quest for the Best Tempura (and a Little Bit of Existential Dread)

  • Morning – The Temple Experience (and Maybe a Ghost?): Decided the best way to cure a karaoke hangover was spiritual enlightenment. Visited a nearby temple. Peaceful, serene… Then I saw a flicker of movement in the corner of my eye? Probably just the wind. Definitely not a ghost. Definitely. I'm just going to enjoy the architecture.
  • Mid-Morning – The Train Ride of Nostalgia (and a Near-Miss): Took a local train. The scenery was breathtaking – rice paddies, little villages, mountains that kissed the clouds. Almost missed my stop because I was too busy staring out the window. Note to self: Pay more attention.
  • Lunch – The Tempura Revelation (or, My Taste Buds Found Heaven): The quest began. Found a tiny, unassuming restaurant. Ordered the tempura. IT WAS AN EXPERIENCE. The batter was light, crispy, the vegetables were fresh and bursting with flavor. I'm talking about the best tastebuds experience I've ever had. I may have cried a little. (Okay, I definitely cried a little. It was that good.)
  • Afternoon – The Beach (and the Struggle is Real): Decided to try surfing. (I know, I know. Amateur hour.) The waves were intimidating. I spent more time wiping out than riding. But the ocean air, the sun – pure bliss. I may never be a surfer, but the effort mattered.
  • Evening – Dinner, Drinks, and the Hotel Views: More of the food, more sake. The hotel had a restaurant, a bar, and a view. What a great decision. The view from the hotel was stunning. It made me wish I could stay in Japan forever.

Day 3: The Museum Fiasco, and the Unforgettable Farewell

  • Morning – Museum of Everything (and My Complete Ignorance): Visited a local museum. It was about… a lot. I got lost. Got confused. I had no idea what I was looking at, but was more interested in the architecture of the museum. But the cafe was great and the view was amazing.
  • Lunch – The Unplanned Meal: I had no idea where to eat, I ended up, with a quick search of the internet, at a restaurant. I ordered things. So, it’s okay. It was great, and the environment was nice.
  • Afternoon – The Farewell (and the Tears): One last walk along the beach. The sun was setting, painting the sky in fiery hues. A moment of real peace settled over me. The memories, the food, the chaos… all worth it.
  • Evening – The Hotel Farewell: Farewell dinner at the hotel. The staff was so kind. I left a HUGE tip. I really wanted to say thank you to all of them for their kindness. It made me feel so touched.

Final Thoughts & Reflections (or, the Messy Wrap-Up):

Japan, you were a rollercoaster. You were confusing. You were challenging. And you were, without a doubt, one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I’m still a little mortified by the karaoke. The food was incredible. The kindness of the people… it touched my soul. I’m already planning my return. And next time, I’m bringing a translator (and maybe earplugs for my colleagues).

Pro Tip: Don't be afraid to look lost. Embrace the chaos. The best surprises are found when you least expect them.

Unbelievable Luxury Awaits: Mikuni Kanko Hotel - Fukui, Japan (Honest FAQs, Because Let's Be Real)

Okay, seriously, is this place *actually* as ridiculously fancy as the pictures?

Look, the photos? They're not *lying*. Mikuni Kanko Hotel is genuinely opulent. Think minimalist chic meets traditional Japanese elegance, all bathed in the glow of the Sea of Japan. But "ridiculously fancy"? Yeah, maybe. I walked in and immediately felt like I'd accidentally gatecrashed a Bond villain’s holiday. Seriously, I was expecting a monocle and a velvet smoking jacket to suddenly appear. I spent the first half hour just... staring. The lobby? Gleaming. The staff? Incredibly polite – they might even *bow* to the point of vertigo. It took me a while to just *breathe* and understand that this wasn't some elaborate prank.

What's the deal with the onsen (hot springs)? Are they *really* worth it? And are they awkward?

Okay, the onsen. This is where things get... interesting. First off, YES. Worth it. Absolutely, unequivocally YES. The water? Soothing. The views? Mind-blowing. The whole experience? Profoundly relaxing. But the awkward part? Oh, it's a thing.

I'm a "cover up everything" kind of person. Walking into a communal bath, butt-naked, in front of strangers? My anxiety levels were through the roof. I stood in the locker room, sweating, feeling like I was about to run the marathon. But... then I just went for it. Took a deep breath, and did. The other people there were very… respectful. Quiet, peaceful. And after a few minutes, the awkwardness melted away. Seriously. You forget about your imperfections (which, believe me, I have plenty). You just… relax. The water warmed me up from the inside out, and I drifted in and out of focus, seeing a magnificent blue sea from the outside, and then felt so good, I even smiled like I was back in the womb. So, embrace the awkward. It's worth it for the sheer, unadulterated bliss afterwards.

The food… is it as delicious as they say? What should I REALLY order?

The food. Oh. My. God. Yes. It's as delicious as they say, and then some. Think art on a plate. Think exquisite flavors that dance on your tongue. Think… you'll be dreaming about it for weeks afterwards. I'm not even kidding.

Okay, here's the thing: They offer a *kaiseki* dinner (a multi-course traditional Japanese meal). Do it. Absolutely. Devour it. Don't be afraid to try *everything*, even if you're not sure what it is. I had the most incredible sashimi I’ve ever tasted – the freshest seafood. Then, there was the grilled fish, that was amazing, and the wagyu beef…oh, the wagyu beef. Even the rice was special! Honestly? Order whatever the staff recommends. They know what they're doing, and they'll guide you through each course. Just… be prepared for a food coma. Seriously, you will want to be wheeled off to bed after the meal. Maybe even ask for a wheelbarrow.

One little confession: I was so stuffed at one point that I could barely *breathe*, but I still kept eating. It was just… too good to stop. And yes, they also have lovely simple breakfast options.

Are the rooms ACTUALLY ocean view? And are they comfortable?

Yes and YES. The ocean view rooms… they are *stunning*. You wake up to the sunrise over the Sea of Japan. It’s breathtaking. I spent a good portion of my stay just staring out the window, lost in thought. (Okay, I did a lot of staring out the window!) You can practically hear the waves. It’s just… pure magic.

And the rooms themselves? Comfortable doesn’t even begin to cover it. Spacious, immaculately clean, and with all the amenities you could possibly need. Think plush bedding, a luxurious bathroom, and even a little seating area to enjoy the view. I could've happily moved in. Actually, I briefly considered it. My only qualm? The temptation to stay in bed all day, enjoying the view. Which, honestly, I did for a little while. No regrets.

What's the staff like? Are they super stuffy?

"Stuffy"? No way. Attentive? Absolutely. The staff at Mikuni Kanko Hotel are the epitome of Japanese hospitality. They are incredibly polite, helpful, and genuinely want to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

Yes, they bow. A lot. I felt a little guilty, actually, because I wasn’t quite sure how to reciprocate gracefully. But they're also incredibly warm and welcoming. They speak decent English (enough to get by, at least), and they're always ready to assist with anything you need. From helping you navigate the facilities to offering recommendations for local attractions, they go above and beyond. And they're patient. Seriously, I lost my room key one day and the staff were completely unfazed, helpful, and cheerful. They handled it with such grace! Just remember to pack your own good manners.

Are there any downsides? ANYTHING?

Okay, fine. Let's be brutally honest. Yes, there are a *few* potential downsides. One: the cost. This isn’t a budget hotel. It’s a splurge. You’ll need a little money to afford it but believe me, it's worth it. Two: the location is a bit remote. You’re not exactly in the middle of a bustling city. You'll need to travel more to see local attractions. On the other hand, that isolation adds to the feeling of escape! And third: The temptation to just... stay there forever. Seriously. Consider yourself warned.

One more very minor quibble: I got a little *lost* one time trying to find the spa. The hotel is quite large and there aren't really a lot of signs in English (which isn't a huge deal, as the staff helped me immediately), and it felt a bit like I was wandering around a maze of pure luxury. But honestly? Those are minor things. The experience is so exceptional, that I’d still come back here in a heartbeat.

Tell me about *one* specific experience that just *blew you away*.

Okay. So, this is a bit silly, but it completely sums up the Mikuni Kanko magic. It was the second night of my stay. ITravel Stay Guides
