Escape to Paradise: Aranceto Hotel, Syracuse - A Review as Real as the Sicilian Sun
Okay, so you're thinking Syracuse? You're thinking paradise? And you're eyeing the Aranceto Hotel? Buckle up, because I just got back, and let me tell you, it's less a straight line and more a winding road, like navigating a Sicilian backstreet in a Vespa. Prepare for some real talk.
First things first: Accessibility. This is a big one for me, because traveling with a slightly wonky knee (thanks, Brussels sprouts!), I need to know I can actually get to the beach without looking like a toddler climbing Everest. The Aranceto scores okay. They mention facilities for disabled guests. The elevator is a lifesaver, literally. But I didn't see any explicit signage indicating dedicated accessible rooms or ramps. It’s Italy, things are…charming. So, definitely call ahead and confirm your specific accessibility needs. Don't assume anything.
Now, let's talk Cleanliness and Safety because, well, hello, global pandemic! The Aranceto clearly takes this seriously. I’m talking layers of safety. Their Anti-viral cleaning products are definitely on the menu and they're doing Daily Disinfection in common areas. They even have Sanitized kitchen and tableware items. Their staff seemed genuinely freaked out about germs which I liked. Hand Sanitizer everywhere, and the staff really knows the safety protocols. I appreciated the Rooms Sanitized between stays but you can opt-out if you like. It's your choice. They also have a Doctor/nurse on call, the Hygiene certification seemed legit, and the Anti-viral cleaning products made me feel less like a walking petri dish. The Staff Trained in Safety Protocol seemed actually invested which is good.
Rooms: Ah, the sanctuary. Let's be real, Italian hotels can be a mixed bag. The Aranceto's rooms? Pretty darn good. Wi-Fi [free] is a godsend (more on that later!). Air conditioning is essential in the Sicilian heat. I had a room with a nice Window that opens, a Refrigerator for those late-night gelato runs, and a surprisingly comfortable Seating area where I could devour my new Alessandro Baricco paperback. The Blackout curtains are your friend, trust me. The Bathroom was clean, with a Hair dryer and all the usual Toiletries. I even had Bathrobes, which made me feel ridiculously fancy. The only "complaint" (and it’s a small one) is that the decor is…well, it’s a hotel. But it’s clean, comfortable and everything works.
Internet? Yes! And it’s a huge plus. The Free Wi-Fi in all rooms! is a must. I like the room, I like it a lot, I can access the internet in the room, and that's all that matters.
Dining, Drinking, and Snacking: This is where things get interesting. The Breakfast (Buffet) was solid, a classic European spread – pastries, cheeses, the works. I may or may not have gone back for a second round… or a third. The Coffee/tea in the restaurant was good, and the Coffee Shop was a nice touch. There's a Poolside bar where you can while away the afternoon with a Negroni, gazing at the Pool with a view. The Restaurants themselves are a solid option with A la carte in restaurant, Asian breakfast and Asian cuisine in restaurant. I was too busy exploring, though.
My Craziest Aranceto Memory: I will always always remember the time I spent in the on-site Sauna, Steamroom, and Spa. I am a regular Spa goer, and the Aranceto is absolutely up there with the best. They also do things like Body Scrub, Body Wrap, Foot bath, Massage, and Spa/sauna. The pool with the view and the amazing sauna and spa, that made it all worth it. The water was perfect, the view – chefs kiss - of the Mediterreanean sea. I was genuinely, completely, blissfully relaxed. I spent like three hours there one afternoon. Did I mention it was amazing? Pure, unfiltered relaxation. And yes, I did get a little tipsy on the prosecco they offered – don’t judge! The entire experience was a highlight of the whole trip.
Things to Do / Ways to Relax: The hotel's got you covered. There’s a Fitness center, if you’re into that (I mostly stuck to the Sauna and Spa). The Gym/fitness area is the perfect way to start the day. The Swimming pool [outdoor] is lovely, and the Swimming pool is also great. Plus it has Pool with view. They also have Terrace
Services and Conveniences: This is where the Aranceto shines. The Concierge was incredibly helpful, sorting out everything from dinner reservations to figuring out the best way to get to Ortigia. The Doorman was always there with a smile, the Dry cleaning and Laundry service certainly came in handy. There are Facilities for disabled guests, and, even a Gift/souvenir shop in case you forgot to buy your mother something. The Car park [free of charge] is a huge bonus if you're driving.
Getting Around: They have Airport transfer! Car park [free of charge]! I wish I had gotten a car because it can be rather hard getting around especially if you want to explore the countryside and the towns!
For the Kids: They do seem Family/child friendly, offering Babysitting service, and Kids meal.
The Not-So-Perfect Bits:
- The Location: The hotel isn’t right in the heart of Syracuse. You'll need a taxi or a bit of a walk to get to the main historical sites. But the peace and quiet are a definite plus.
- Food Delivery is available.
- Cashless payment service is available and so useful!
- The Food some of the menu at restaurant is in need of some tweaks.
My Verdict and Who Should Book:
Look, the Aranceto Hotel isn't perfect. But it's a solid choice. It's clean, comfortable, has great amenities, and the staff tries genuinely hard to make your stay pleasant.
You should book the Aranceto if:
- You want a relaxing escape with a focus on wellness and downtime.
- You appreciate a good pool, spa, and a decent breakfast.
- You don’t mind a short commute to the main attractions.
- You value cleanliness and safety.
You might want to look elsewhere if:
- You're looking for a hotel right in the thick of the action.
- Accessibility is a major concern (call and ask first!).
- You're a food snob (the restaurant is good, but not Michelin-star good).
Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 Arancini (because everything's better with fried rice balls!).

Unbelievable Tenom Sabah Homestay: Your Dream Vacation Awaits!Aranceto Awakening: A Syracuse Slog with Sunburn (and a Side of Sass)
Alright, listen up, because this is MY take on Syracuse, and trust me, it’s not going to be all perfectly filtered Instagram shots. This is raw, unfiltered, and probably a little chaotic. Welcome to the Aranceto Hotel itinerary, but prepare for a detour or two (or ten).
Day 1: Arrival & Existential Crisis with a Lemon Granita
- 14:00 – Arrival at Catania Airport (CTA): Okay, first impression? Hot. Like, melting-in-the-seat-of-your-pants hot. Also, the baggage carousel is clearly a metaphor for the futility of life. Are we really going to find our luggage ever? Thankfully, mine miraculously shows up, looking slightly more bewildered than I feel.
- 14:30 – Taxi from CTA to Aranceto Hotel: Sweet merciful olives, the road! The driver is a blur of gesturing hands and rapid-fire Italian. I'm pretty sure he cursed out a scooter five times in the span of a single song. Also, the scenery is stunning, but I'm too busy clutching my suitcase to appreciate it.
- 15:30 – Check-in at Aranceto Hotel: The hotel itself is, shall we say, charmingly… rustic. The lobby smells faintly of old books and something indefinably floral. The front desk guy, bless his heart, looks like he’s seen a ghost (probably because he’s dealt with tourists like me all day). My room? Small, but with a balcony! And a view of… something. I’ll figure it out later.
- 16:00 – First Meal of Immortality: Forget the travel guide. I am officially in search of the best granita in Syracuse. I wander down the street and stumble upon a tiny cafe with a sign that promises “Granita al Limone – Heaven in a Cup.” SOLD. This, people, is where the real magic begins. The lemon granita is a religious experience. Seriously. It's a cold, tart, sweet bite of pure, unadulterated joy. I almost wept. And I think I'll be back every day.
- 17:00 – Initial explorations: I was told to go out and see the world, explore the streets, and take pictures of the cathedral. But, right now, a nap is calling my name. The Sicilian sun is brutal.
- 19:00 – Dinner at a Local Trattoria: Found a little place on a side street. Pasta alla Norma, because, when in Rome (or, you know, Syracuse… close enough). It was decent, but the wine? Forget about it. It tastes like cheap, but I still loved it. I could get used to this cheap-wine-with-pasta life.
- 21:00 – Staring at the balcony night: The stars are beautiful, the air is heavy with the scent of something citrusy (maybe the lemons?), and the world feels… possible. For now, I'll settle for a bit of quiet and a glass of wine.
Day 2: Ancient Ruins & My Own Personal Hell (and a Lot of Gelato)
- 08:00 – Wake Up: It is a hot day. I try to wake up early but fail.
- 09:00 – Breakfast at the hotel: The breakfast buffet is surprisingly good! But, I am not a breakfast person. The croissants are flaky, the coffee is strong enough to stand a spoon in, and the staff is trying their best to keep order.
- 10:00 – Archaeological Park of Neapolis: Okay, this is where the wheels kind of fall off the organized-travel-wagon. The amphitheater is impressive, sure, but I was too busy sweating like a pig to actually appreciate it. I actually melted. The Roman ruins are a blur of sun-drenched stone and general misery. Bring a hat. Bring water. Bring a sense of humor. And maybe a fainting couch, just in case.
- 13:00 – Lunch: Food, please, quick! Found a shady spot near the Greek Theater and consumed a pizza so fast it would have made Flash jealous. It was probably 20 minutes before I knew it.
- 14:00 – The Ear of Dionysius: This is interesting but way too crowded. Every single person there is touching it, and it is the dirtiest thing I have ever seen.
- 15:00 – Gelato Rescue: This is an emergency. I need gelato. Like, now. I find a place with pistachio and the most vibrant pink strawberry imaginable. Pure, unadulterated bliss. Seriously, gelato is the hero of this trip.
- 16:00 – Wander through Ortigia: Ortigia is a stunning island, just beautiful. The architecture is breathtaking, the shops are tempting, and the water… oh, the water! You can almost reach out and touch the blue. This is much better than the ruins, much nicer. This is the perfect environment for a relaxing break.
- 19:00 – Dinner at a Seaside Restaurant: Seafood is the menu, and the sea is the view. The fresh fish melts in my mouth, and the sunset paints the sky in hues of orange and lavender. The people around me get a bit noisy, but they are all having a good time.
- 21:00 – Ortigia at Night: The light of night is a beautiful contrast of the day. The streets become alive with a vibrant energy, as the night comes to life with music and laughter.
Day 3: Duomo & (Another) Granita
- 09:00 – Breakfast: I need a caffeine. No, I need a lot of caffeine.
- 10:00 – Syracuse Cathedral (Duomo): Finally, some air conditioning! This is a breathtaking example of Baroque architecture, built on top of an ancient Greek temple. It's like a history sandwich; delicious and impressive, and very, very old. There is so much history here.
- 11:30 – Piazza Duomo: I take a quick stroll to appreciate this architectural glory. I am very grateful to be here.
- 13:00 – Lunch: I stumble upon a busy, authentic trattoria. The simple pasta dishes are delicious, the service is fast. A true taste of Italy.
- 14:00 – The Street: I'm glad it's not as hot today, I can finally enjoy the streets and take the time to observe. The shops are full of interesting things, the smell of food is always present.
- 15:00 – My Favorite Cafe - Granita #2 (or 5?): Okay, this is a problem. I have become obsessed with this cafe. They have more flavors than I can count, and I think I'm going to try them all. This time I chose a coffee granita, because, well, why not?
- 16:00 – Aranceto Hotel - Pack up: It's all over, sadly. I feel like only yesterday it was arrival day, and now I have to pack and leave. This is really sad, and I want to stay.
- 17:00 – Check out: I grab my bags and go.
- 18:00 – Taxi to Catania Airport (CTA).
Final Thoughts:
Syracuse, you were a sweaty, sun-drenched, gelato-fueled adventure. You challenged me, exhausted me, and made me question all my life choices. But, through it all, it made me laugh, it made me smile. I think I actually enjoyed it.
So, would I recommend the Aranceto Hotel itinerary?
No, not really, unless you plan on breaking the rules and doing it your own way. But if you're willing to embrace the chaos, to sweat, to eat gelato until your teeth ache, and to get lost in the beautiful, messy heart of Syracuse? Then, absolutely, yes. Just bring a fan. And maybe a support group.
P.S. I'm already craving that granita. Curse you, Syracuse. Curse you. And thank you. Arrivederci!
